About Lead Belly
Huddie William Ledbetter, known professionally as Lead Belly (born January 20, 1888 in Mooringsport, Louisiana; died December 6, 1949), was an iconic American folk and blues musician. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Lead Belly is revered for his virtuosity on the 12-string acoustic guitar and his booming, resonant tenor voice.
He preserved and composed foundational American folk-blues standards including 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' (famously immortalized by Nirvana), 'Midnight Special', 'Goodnight, Irene', and 'Cotton Fields'. His bass-heavy 12-string guitar fingerpicking and classic blues turnarounds are the bedrock of modern rock and acoustic guitar playing.
